Corporate Responsibility at DHL

Corporate Responsibility is a core element of our corporate strategy. Acting responsibly as a company means we treat our employees, the environment, the interests of society and the capital that has been entrusted to us in a manner that is respectful and sustainable. Only in this way can we be successful in the long term.

Towards a more environment-friendly future with GoGreen

GoGreen is the climate protection program of Deutsche Post World Net. By 2020, we intend to improve our energy efficiency by 30 percent compared with 2007. Along with the Group companies around the world, we at DHL Finland are working to improve our efficiency in regard to the carbon emissions based on the GoGreen program.

In order to reach the targets we will assess the carbon emissions throughout our operations on a regular basis and introduce a variety of measures to reduce them.

The elements of the GoGreen program are sharing responsibility – involving subcontractors in the efficiency target and offering customers options to send carbon-neutral shipments; fleet optimization; examining and improving the energy efficiency of real estate assets; raising efficiency through introducing innovative technology; and changing behaviors by supporting our employees in leading an environment-friendly life both at work and at home.

In Finland, environment is built into our management systems. 100 percent of the DHL operations in Finland are environmentally certified according to ISO14001.

Awareness, Recycling and Planning

Awareness lies at the heart of environment-friendly behavior. Environmental topics are part of the introduction training of all new employees. Thanks to training and briefing our employees, more than 90 percent of all waste caused by our operations are recycled or used for energy production.

Motion sensors are installed to the electric lighting systems of our largest warehouses and the lighting in our main offices has a timed switch-off function.

Most of our own van and truck fleet complies with Euro 4 emission standards. Nearly 100 percent of our trailer fleet is ”piggyback” equipped to enable transport by train. We also use environment-friendly tires with low rolling resistance on our trailers.

Through efficient route and load planning we strive to reduce empty mileage and number of transported units. Fuel consumption is constantly monitored. Professional trainers teach our drivers defensive driving and energy-efficient driving techniques.

Our customers also have the option to send their shipments using DHL GOGREEN carbon-neutral shipping services.

DHL volunteers for the protection of the Baltic Sea

Finland is one of the coastal countries of the Baltic Sea, which is a unique marine ecosystem and home to rich levels of biodiversity and wildlife. Continuous growth of oil transports and other traffic on the Baltic Sea increase the risk of an oil spill, which would cause severe damage to the environment.

To contribute to the protection of the Baltic Sea, DHL Finland has had a group of volunteered employees trained on practical oil spill clean-up and beach sanitation. The training is part of the ”Operation Mermaid” by WWF Finland. After training, the employees enrolled in WWF’s voluntary oil spill response troops. In case of an emergency, WWF will summon them to assist the authorities. Clean-up of beach areas is slow manual work where the input of volunteers is invaluable.

Making a positive impact - globally and locally

Deutsche Post DHL is committed to making a lasting and positive change in the world by using its knowledge and global presence in ways that benefit people and the environment. We focus on three strategic areas of involvement - GoGreen, GoHelp and GoTeach - to live up our responsibility. We always encourage our employees to volunteer in corporate and local projects.
